Main Scilly information

The Isles of Scilly lie 28 miles south west of Cornwall's Land End.

The Islands are officially designated as An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

There is a breed of shrew which is unique to the Islands, the Scilly Shrew. Living up to the name you may see the back end of the shrews sticking out of the grass, while the head is kept hidden in the grass. the shrews obviously think that if they can not see you then you can not see them.

The Island Birdlife is famed throughout the world not least for the rare migrants. Along with the Sub Tropical plant life and rare plant species this all makes for a wonderful holiday for anyone.

There are 56 islands mostly very small : Only 6 islands are inhabited.

1) St. Mary's

This is the largest island and home to 3/4 of the population. The capital Hugh Town includes most of the commercial facilities including thee Banks, post office and main shops.

Boats to and from the other islands operate from the town quay. There are also boat trips around the islands, fishing trips and bird/seal spotting trips. When the Gigs are racing there are boats available for visitors to follow the gigs. If these trips have not tired you out there are plenty more.

2) Tresco

This island is most famous for it's great diversity of it's environment. Even on this relatively small island there are heaths, granite outcrops, farm land and sub tropical gardens.

3) St. Martin's

This island is 2 miles long. it has excellnet views and long beaches. One of the main attractions seems to be the bakery for the home made produce.

4) St. Agnes

This island is 1 mile in diameter. Flower growing is it's principal industry. many rare birds are seen on this island particularly during the Autumn migration.

5) Bryher

This island has a very small resident population. It has the magnificent Atlantic to it's west and the beautiful Tresco to it's east.

6) Gugh

This island has only 2 houses and is only accessible from St. Agnes on foot at low tide via a connecting sand bar. One of the main attractions for Gugh seems to be the Gull colony where in breeding season hundreds of chicks can easily be seen.
